Francis P. Callahan

Francis P. Callahan Sr., age 92, formerly of 237 S. Locust St., Mount Carmel, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2016, at Nottingham Village Nursing Center, where he had resided.
Born Jan. 13, 1924, in Mount Carmel, he was a son of the late John and Mary Ann (Dever) Callahan.

A 1942 graduate of Catholic High School in Mount Carmel, he served in the U.S. Army during World War II, serving with the 2064th Engineer Aviation Fire Fighting Platoon. He participated in the Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe campaigns. He received the Good Conduct Medal and the European Theater Medal with six bronze stars

On Nov. 11, 1943, in New Orleans, he was married to Mildred
(Kwiatkowski-Flowers) Callahan, who survives.

Francis was employed as a supervisor at the former General Cigar Factory in Mount Carmel; he then went on to work in the security department at Selinsgrove State Center, from which he retired.

He was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church; Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2110; American Legion Post 91; Anthracite and Clover Hose fire companies, all of Mount Carmel. Francis was an avid camper and hiker. He enjoyed spending time with his many grandchildren. He was also an avid Philadelphia Phillies baseball, Notre Dame and Mount Carmel Area football fan.

In addition to his wife, survivors include four daughters: Joanne Fishburn of Ashland; Margaret Callahan-Kuskin and her husband Lou of Harrisburg; Diane Parenzan of Morrisville, and Ann Wengrenovich of Elysburg; three sons: Francis P. Callahan Jr. and his wife Janet of Richmond, Va.; Thomas Callahan of Apollo Beach, Fla., and David Callahan and his wife Jody of Danville; 15 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by several brothers and sisters.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 30, 2016, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, with the Rev. Francis Karwacki as celebrant. Interment will take place at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville. Viewing will be Thursday from 6-8 p.m. and Friday from 9-10:45 a.m. at the Joseph J. Stutz Inc. Funeral Home, 40 S. Market St., Mount Carmel, Joseph J. Stutz III, Supervisor.
