Arlene Malewski of Kulpmont passed away on February 24, 2023, at the age of 89, while surrounded by her family.
Arlene was born in Mount Carmel on October 17, 1933, to Arthur and Mary (Pinamonti) Adams. She attended St. Peter’s School and then Mount Carmel High School, where she was a member of the basketball and volleyball teams, and the glee and dancing clubs. She graduated in 1950, and married George Malewski in 1953. The two of them worked together on a small farm until George’s death in 1958. She then worked at numerous local establishments, including Woolworth’s, Langis’s, and the Little Bear Supermarket.
Arlene raised her four children as a single mom. All of them shared her love of music and were members of the Mount Carmel Mounties. A member of the Band Parents’ Association for ten years, she chaperoned countless band trips, on which she was known as “Mrs. S.”
An active traveler, Arlene visited Florida, Missouri, California, Las Vegas, Alaska, Hawaii, and of course Atlantic City, where she enjoyed playing the slot machines. She was an avid bingo player, and attended local games several times a week with her many friends.
For the last 34 years Arlene lived with her daughter and son-in-law, Ann and John Frasch, in Kulpmont, where she helped raise her grandchildren, Jacob and Maura Frasch. She was proud of, and loved talking about, the accomplishments of all her grandchildren.
Arlene also loved planning and hosting the annual “Cookout with Mam,” which started as a small get-together of a dozen friends but eventually grew into a not-to-be-missed summer event with nearly 200 guests. She loved the music and the karaoke, seeing her family, and making new friends at these Cookouts, and began talking about the next party while still cleaning up from the last one.
Arlene was a former member of St. Peter’s Church in Mount Carmel and Queen of the Most Holy Rosary in Elysburg. At the time of her death, she was a member of Holy Angels in Kulpmont.
Arlene was preceded in death by her parents, her husband George, and her son Anthony Scopatz, Jr. She is survived by her sons George Malewski and Michael Malewski; her daughter Ann (Scopatz) Frasch and her husband John; and her grandchildren Jacob Frasch, Maura Frasch and her husband Cody Nolter, Luke Chiaretti and his wife Jessica, and Paige (Malewski) Falco and her husband Nick. Her whole family - and the countless friends she made everywhere she went - will not forget her.
