Daniel W. Mellor,57, of Mount Carmel, passed away Saturday, December 3, 2022, at UPMC West Shore, Mechanicsburg.
Born in Plainfield, N.J. on December 9,1964, he was a son of the late Raymond and Patricia “Patsy” (Parnell) Mellor.
He was a 1984 Graduate of Mt. Carmel Area High School
Daniel entered Army in September 1984 completing OSUT as a 19K Armor Crewman. He was Active Duty from September 1984 to June 1988. In that time frame he served in Kirchgoens, Germany 2nd BN 33rd Armored Regiment and at Ft. Hood Texas with the 3rd BN 32nd Armored Regiment, 3rd AD. He again enlisted in the Army Reserves as an engineer in February 1990 to December 1991.
He started his PAARNG career in December of 1992 with D Co. 2nd 103 AR. While serving as a Tank Platoon SGT for B Co. 2nd 103 AR he was deployed to Iraq in 2004 for Operation Iraqi Freedom II and III where he served as an MP Platoon SGT until April 2005. He was a part of operation Vigilant Resolve in Fallujah and the Handover of Sovereignty in Baghdad. While in Baghdad he served as a member of the Navy Special Warfare Task Group personal security detail for the Vice President of the Iraqi Interim Government working directly with U.S. Navy SEAL teams 2 and 5 providing Close-in Protection elements for hundreds of high risk motorcade movements.
Upon his return was he transferred to HHC 2-103 AR where he served as a 63A Support Platoon SGT. Then to the 55th BSTB where he served as the Support Platoon SGT. Later he became the First Sergeant of CO G 228th in July 2008. In 2011 he was promoted to SGM serving as the Chief Maintenance Mechanic Operations NCO, G4, 28ID. While serving in the Division Headquarters he was deployed to Kuwait in 2018. He was then promoted into a Command Sergeant Major Position in the 128th BSB from which he retired. He has been a member of the military for 37 years.
His awards, decorations and citations include; Bronze Star; 2 Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal (w/2 OLC), Army Achievement Medal (w/9 OLC), Good Conduct Medal, Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal (w/4 OLC), National Defense Service Medal (w/1 BSS), Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal with Hourglass and M Device, NCO Professional Development Ribbon (4), Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon (3), Thomas White Medal, Thomas J. Stewart Medal, Meritorious Unit Citation, Combat Action Badge, and the Ordnance Order of Samuel Sharpe Saint Michael award. He also was awarded the 28th ID Distinguished Gunnery Certificate.
Dan was an avid Minnesota Vikings football fan and loved to camp at Ideal Campground with his friends.
Surviving are his daughter, Alexandra Mellor-Wysocki and her husband Ryan of Poughquag, New York; his sister, Theresa "Terry" Hummel and her husband Dean of Mount Carmel; nephew, David Hummel of Bloomsburg; niece, Callie Hummel of Mt. Carmel; a great-nephew, Nolan Yaneck; cousins and friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Raymond Mellor on April 4, 2019 and David Mellor on July 22, 2020.
A viewing will be held Wednesday December 7, 2022 from 10 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. at the Joseph J. Stutz, Inc. Funeral Home 40 South Market Street Mt. Carmel, Joseph J. Stutz, III Supervisor. Interment with military honors will follow in Mt. Carmel Cemetery
