Stephen J. Mayton

Stephen (Steve) J. Mayton, 73, of Kulpmont was called by the Good Lord on Tuesday evening, September 21, 2021. Steve was born in Shamokin on February 9, 1948 to Joseph and Dorothy (Adams) Mayton.

He attended schools in Coal Township until his senior year of high school when his was the first class to graduate from the jointure forming Shamokin Area School District in 1966.

After graduation, Steve attended a trade school where he had a talent for technical drawing. He worked for Ritz-Craft Homes in Paxinos until 1968 when he left for service in the U.S. Army. Steve trained as an artillery surveyor at Fort Sill, Oklahoma and completed his tour of duty in Germany. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Spec 5.

Steve worked with his father and uncles at the family’s gas station (ARCO) in Luke Fidler until it closed.
He then designed and opened his own business in Ranshaw known as the Mayton Mini Mart. He worked there until his retirement in 2005.

Steve recently came out of retirement to work part time for Advance Auto Parts where he especially enjoyed making deliveries to local businesses.

An avid bowler and member of the Shamokin Moose Lodge, Steve met the love of his life at the Lodge during a bowling tournament. He and Mary enjoyed sixteen happy years together before her passing.

Fond of Ford Mustangs, Steve owned many over his lifetime. He was also the proud owner of a model car collection of some prized Mustang classics. Steve was also an avid golfer.

Steve was a member of Our Lady’s Church in Mt. Carmel where a funeral Mass will be held.

Steve is survived by his brother, William (Bill) Mayton, his sister, Mary Ann (Mayton) Venarchick and her husband John, his niece, Vida Saylor, and his stepson, Robert (BJ) Swaldi and his wife, Julie. He is also survived and loved by many other nieces and nephews including great-nieces and great-nephews. Steve also leaves behind his cat and constant companion, Gussy.

He was predeceased by his parents, his loving wife, Mary, and his sister-in-law, Jean Mayton, who he thought of as his big sister.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Monday, September 27,2021 at 11:00 am in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church with the Rev. Francis J. Karwacki, Pastor as celebrant. Interment will follow in Northumberland Memorial Park in Stonington. A visitation will be held on Monday from 10:00 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. at the Joseph J. Stutz, Inc. Funeral Home, 40 South Market Street, Mt. Carmel, Joseph J. Stutz, III Supervisor. Memorial donations may be made in Steve’s name to Our Lady of Mt.
