Mount Carmel

John Stanley Habowski, 64 of Mount Carmel passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, January 27, 2024 at his home.

John or “Hobo” as he was known to his friends, was born in Shamokin to the late Chester and Catherine (Dormer) Habowski.  He was raised by his Aunt Eleanor and Uncle Frank Nashlenas from the age of four after his parents died in a traffic accident.

John graduated from Mount Carmel High School and Mansfield University of PA.

He enlisted in the US Navy and retired as a Senior Chief after serving twenty-four years of which the last few were in Italy. 

After retirement he substituted teaching at Mount Carmel High School and later worked for the Department of Social Security in Pottsville. 

He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2110, Member of the American Legion and the Kulpmont Sportmen’s Association.

John enjoyed traveling especially to many of the Olympic trials throughout the world with his nephew Eddie Lawler.  He also enjoyed attending Grateful Dead Concerts.  John loved riding his Harley and vacationing in Virginia Beach with his sister Kathy.

John is survived by his sisters, Linda Lawler and her husband Eddie of Wilburton and Kathy Ann ( Lutz and her husband Kenny of Mount Carmel; brothers, Chet Habowski and his wife Pat of Harrisburg and Bill Habowski and his wife Annette of Kulpmont; cousins, Frank Nashlenas and his wife Pat in North Carolina and Eileen Bergan and her husband Joe of Mount Carmel; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and his aunt and uncle, John was preceded in death by his sister, Rose Marie Habowski.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, February 5, 2024 at 11:00 am in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish with Very Rev. Francis J. Karwacki, Pastor as the celebrant. Burial will be private.  A viewing will be held on Monday morning from 9:00 am until 10:45 am at the Joseph J. Stutz, Inc. Funeral Home, 40 South Market Street, Mount Carmel, Joseph J.
