John "Jake" Hirsh

John “Jake” Hirsh, 96, of 236 South Locust Street, Mt. Carmel passed away on Saturday, November 11, 2023 at the Mount Carmel Senior Living Community.

Born in Mt. Carmel on December 17, 1926, he was the son of the late Edward and Mary (Shetulski) Hirsh.

Jake attended Mt. Carmel Schools.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II from 1944 until 1947.  He was attached to the Seabee’s unit of the Navy.  He participated in South Pacific Phillipine invasion and was stationed in the Pacific theater and China seas.

On November 27, 1948 in Our Mother of Consolation Church, he married Dorothy (Zarzeci) Hirsh who preceded him in death on May 3, 2013.

He had been employed for over Thirty-five years as re-capper of tires at the former Bolstrum’s tire service in Mt. Carmel before his retirement.

Jake was a member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Parish, the Veteran’s of Foreign Wars Post 2110 where he was a past Commander, Clover Hose Company and the Knights of Columbus Council #628 all of Mount Carmel.

Surviving are one daughter, Eileen Hirsch of Mt. Carmel; two sisters, Lorraine Chicalo of Paxinos and Sister Marie Hirsch of Immaculata.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by one sister, Eleanor Moyer; three brothers, Thomas, Leonard and Aloysius Hirsch; and a special friend, Helen Daniels.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, November 16, 2023 at 11:00 am at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church with the Very Rev. Francis J. Karwacki, Pastor as the celebrant.  Interment with military honors will follow in St. Mary Cemetery, Beaverdale.  A viewing will be held on Thursday morning from 9:00 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. at the Joseph J. Stutz, Inc. Funeral Home, 40 South Market Street, Mt. Carmel, Joseph J. Stutz, III Supervisor.  In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy can be made to the Church of Our Lady, 47 South Market Street, Mt.
