Joseph Kobi

February 20, 1927 — July 10, 2023

Joseph “Joe” Kobi, beloved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather entered eternal life with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Monday, July 10, 2023.


Joe was the son of the late Nickolas and Theresa Kobi. He was the seventh of twelve children and was born at home in Mount Carmel, on February 20, 1927.


 Joe was a member of Mount Carmel High School class of 1945, but he left before graduation to enlist in the U.S. Coast Guard. He served as a member of the Commissioning Crew of USCG Winnebago WHEC-40, a High Endurance U.S. Coast Guard Cutter commissioned in 1945 and home-ported in Long Beach, CA.


Joe married the former Marie Chervanick from Shamokin in May 1949 and shared over 70 happy years with the love of his life until her passing in January, 2020.


For 41 years, Joe owned and operated Kobi’s Market on Locust Street in Mount Carmel. He was locally famous for his Kobi Hoagies and Cheesesteaks which were also sold in convenience stores throughout the coal region and used for fund raising by many local booster clubs.


Joe was a Lifelong Red Tornado fan who faithfully attended all home and away games until his early 90’s. He was also a member of the VFW and Three Ponds Golf Club, where he was an avid golfer.


Joe was known by all as a very friendly man with a big smile for everyone and he was always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need. He was a Born Again Christian and an active member of the Hope Community Church in Mount Carmel.


Joe is survived by his son, James Kobi and his wife Katharine in Virginia Beach, VA and his daughter, JoAnn Siegel in Tampa, FL. Joe was blessed with four grandchildren and ten great grandchildren, Kaia Tingley and her husband Nate and children Silas and Alanna in Austin TX, Matt Siegel and his wife Erin and children Emily and Molly in Tampa, FL, Maxine Angel and her husband Hayyim and children Aviva, Dahlia, Mordechai and Eliyahu in Teaneck, NJ and Nate Siegel and his wife Kasey and children Grace and Jacob in Tampa, FL.


Kobi - A Celebration of Life for Joseph Kobi and his late wife, Marie (Chervanick) Kobi will be held on Wednesday evening, July 19, 2023 at 7:00 pm at Hope Community Church, 551 West Fourth Street, Mount Carmel with Pastor Dan Renno officiating. A visitation will be held on Wednesday evening from 6:00 pm until 7:00 pm at Hope Community Church. Interment for both Joseph and Marie will be held on Thursday morning at 10:30 am at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy can be made to the Hope Community Church, 551 West Fourth Street, Mount Carmel, PA 17851 or the Mount Carmel Public Library, 30 South Oak Street, Mount Carmel, PA, 17851.
