Lawrence William Schott, 57, of 228 South Maple Street Mount Carmel, passed into glory on Tuesday, May 27th, 2025.
A proud graduate of Mt. Carmel Area High School in 1985, Larry went on to attend Bucknell University with the help of the Deppen Scholarship. He earned both a Bachelor of Science in Education and a Master of Science in Education. His teaching career spanned Bloomsburg Christian School, Stephen Decatur High School in Maryland, and finally Pleasant Valley High School in the Poconos.
At 37, Larry was diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease). Despite the physical challenges, he continued to teach high school mathematics for as long as he could, eventually moving back to Mount Carmel where his parents, Thomas and Eleanor, lovingly cared for him.
Larry was a passionate and active sportsman. He coached high school JV baseball, refereed high school basketball, and even started a Powerlifting team at Stephen Decatur. He was an advisor for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He played minor league football as an offensive lineman for the Eastern Shore Blitz in Maryland, participated in golf tournaments, and memorably impersonated "Stone Cold Steve Austin" at a school event. He was also a champion powerlifter for The American Drug-Free Powerlifting Association, earning numerous trophies.
He was an avid sports fan, sharing a love for the Phillies with his mom and remaining a loyal Dallas Cowboys supporter since childhood. Even as his disease progressed, Larry refused to let it define him. With the aid of an eye-response computer, he continued to write newsletters and emails to friends and family, and for a period, even contributed a weekly column about the Phillies to the News-Item.
Larry's strong Christian faith was a cornerstone of his life, allowing him to focus on his eternal life rather than his physical limitations. He was known for his humor, generosity, and his inspiring willingness to share the Gospel with everyone he met.
Larry is survived by his mother, Eleanor (Wolkoski) Schott; his brother, Tom Schott and wife Tracy; his sister, Debra Latovich and her husband Joseph; his niece, Ashley Schott; and his nephews, Austin Schott and wife Adrienne, Joshua Latovich and wife Crystal, Daniel Latovich and friend Lesley, and Caleb Latovich and wife Angela.
He was preceded in death by his father, Thomas, and his grandparents, Bernard and Stella Wolkoski, and William and Alma Schott.
