Roger W. Straub, 78 of Mt. Carmel, passed away on Tuesday, September 16, 2025 in the comfort of his home and surrounded by his 3 children.
Born on December 15, 1946 in Shamokin, Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late Raymond and Marie (Derck) Straub.
He was a decorated United States Army Veteran, having served from 1964 until 1967 and then in the Army Reserves until 1970. Roger served in Vietnam, where he was an E5 specialist.
Prior to his retirement, he worked in several fields and work places. He began his work career as a salesperson for Cardinal Container Corporation, worked as a weight enforcement officer for PENNDOT and spent several years with Consolidated Freightways working as a dock foreman. Always a hard worker and then sole family provider in his later years, he also worked as Code Enforcement officer for Mt, Carmel and was even a sales associate for Walmart in Coal Township. Although not a job as most would see it, he was a devoted caregiver for his eldest son, Eddie. Eddie’s care and happiness was always his number one priority, but no matter what the job was over the years, he worked very hard to give his family all that they needed and then some.
Roger was married in the former Saint Stanislaus Church, Shamokin on June 27, 1970 to Judith A. (Silkowski) Straub who preceded him in death on June 18, 2023. He was a devoted husband and family man and a very proud Pop Pop. He was also a member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Parish.
Before moving to Mt. Carmel 22 years ago, Roger and his family lived in the Pocono Lake / Pocono Pines area where he was involved in the community, coached baseball and served as a Cub Scout pack leader. In addition to that, he was a big supporter of the Special Olympics, ARC and worked with many organizations/programs providing support for children with special needs.
After moving to the Mt. Carmel Area with his late wife, Judy and son Edward, Roger became a passionate supporter of Mt. Carmel Athletics. Roger was well known around town and was well liked by everyone who met him . He was kindhearted, greeted strangers with a friendly hello and everyone became his friend. He loved family time and enjoyed conversation and slinging jokes (and sarcasm) with his friends. He also enjoyed throwing horseshoes, rubbing those scratchoffs and hunting and fishing with his son Roger, brother-in-law Barry and numerous friends.
Surviving are two sons, Edward Straub at home and Roger Straub of Bethlehem; a daughter Christine Meyer and her fiancé Darrin Coulson of Sewickley; six grandchildren, Adam, Emery and Stephanie Meyer, Danielle, Kyleigh and Lauren Straub; two sisters, Patricia Deibler of Kulpmont and Grace Roseman and her husband Barry of Kulpmont; numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and wife he was preceded in death by three sisters Mary Adams, Judy Boehner and Mildred “Toot” Shipe.
