William G. "Bill" Ditchey

William G. “Bill” Ditchey, 69 of 401 South Pine Street, Mount Carmel succumbed to his battle with cancer on Monday, April 15, 2024 which he fought courageously over the past year.  With him were his loving wife, daughter and dear brother, Bob.

He was born on August 11, 1954 at Geisinger, Danville, he was a son of the late William E. and Marie (Honecker) Ditchey.

Bill was a 1972 graduate of Mount Carmel Area High School.

For twenty five years, Bill was employed by the US Postal Service in Mount Carmel.  Following, he was employed for eleven years in the family business of Scicchitano Ace Hardware, Mount Carmel.  In 2011, he formed his own home inspection business, Cornerstone Home Inspections.  

On August 9, 1980 in the former Saint Peter’s Church, Mount Carmel, he married the love of his life, Rosemarie “Tootsie” Scicchitano who survives.

Bill was an active member of Divine Redeemer Church, Mount Carmel.  He was also a Fourth Degree member of the Knights of Columbus Bishop Lawrence F. Schott Council 628 and the American Hose and Chemical Fire Co. No. 1 both of Mount Carmel.

Bill loved the game of fastpitch softball which is exemplified by his many accomplishments in the sport.  Bill was a registered Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) official for more than 20 years.  He served as the Rules Interpreter for the Shikellamy Chapter in District # 4 of the PIAA and was also a working umpire in District # 11.  Bill was the Crew Chief of the PIAA State Final in 2015.  He was also an NCAA umpire.  He became involved with Susquehanna Valley Fastpitch Umpires Association.  He took over the leadership and organization of the association's very popular summer tournament, The Umpires Summer Classic and built it from 14 teams to 76 teams in 15 years under his leadership.  It has become one of the most popular tournaments in Pennsylvania. The tournament is now officially the "Bill Ditchey Umpires Classic"!

Bill loved Mount Carmel and was a diehard supporter of the Mount Carmel Area Red Tornadoes.  He also was an avid Penn State, Philadelphia Phillies, and Philadelphia Eagles fan.

Bill was a great guy who was always willing to help anyone with a project. He loved to travel with his family and also the game of golf.  He spent countless hours on the course with his friends and especially cherished the rounds played with his son. 

Surviving in addition to his wife of forty-three years, Rosemarie “Tootsie” Ditchey are his daughter, Ana Ditchey of Elysburg; son, Billy Ditchey and his wife Rebecca of Johns Island, South Carolina; brother, Bob Ditchey and his wife Kathy of Mount Carmel; sister, Susan Ditchey of Bethel; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Tony and Millie Scicchitano of Elysburg; brothers-in-law, Tony Scicchitano and his wife Cathy of Elysburg, Dr. Michael Scicchitano and his wife Laurel of Kulpmont, Rocco Scicchitano and his wife Jill of Granger, Indiana, and Joseph Scicchitano and his wife Marie of Lake Stevens, Washington; sisters-in-law, Julie Revenis and her husband Mike of Sarasota, Florida, Kathy Ventura and her husband Joe of Sarasota, Florida, Alicia Scicchitano and her husband Eduardo Ruiz of Wilson, North Carolina; Jolene Scicchitano of Mount Carmel and Sandy Ditchey of Mount Carmel; two special aunts, Maria Scicchitano of Dooleyville and Dorothy Ditchey of Harrisburg; many loving nieces and nephews; and his Goldendoodle, “Franklin” and cat “Lucky.”

Preceding him in death in addition to his parents was his brother-in-law, Sam Scicchitano.

Bill had so much to live for, he was expecting his first grandson in June. He loved his family more than anything, they were his world but God had other plans for him. 

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, April 20, 2024 at 11:00 am in Divine Redeemer Church, 300 West Avenue, Mount Carmel with Rev. Bernard Wamayose, A. J., Pastor as the celebrant and Rev. Martin O. Moran as concelebrant and homilist.  Entombment will follow in All Saints Cemetery, Bear Gap.  A visitation will be held on Saturday morning from 8:00 am until 10:45 am with transferal prayers at 10:00 am at the Joseph J. Stutz, Inc. Funeral Home, 40 South Market Street, Mount Carmel, Joseph J. Stutz III, Supervisor.   In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in Bill’s memory can be made to Divine Redeemer Church, 438 West Avenue, Mount Carmel, PA 17851.  To offer condolences to Bill’s family, please sign the guest book below.
