William Paul “Bill” Szido Sr., 85 of 245 Colonial Avenue, Natalie, Mount Carmel Township passed away on Friday night, July 17, 2026.
Born on June 20, 1941 in Atlas, he was a son of the late Paul and Adele (Pollock) Szido.
Bill attended Mount Carmel Schools.
Mr. Szido was a decorated US Army Veteran having served his country from 1958 until 1962 and served a portion of his enlistment in Germany during the Berlin Crisis.
On November 17, 1962, he married the former Catherine L. Sosnoski who survives.
He was retired from the U.S Merchant Marines where he served as a Third Mate Navigator.
Bill was a member of Divine Redeemer Parish, Mount Carmel. He was an avid car enthusiast, he and his wife enjoyed showing their 1959 Cadillac and won numerous awards and trophies over the years. He was musically talented having played the accordion and keyboard; in addition, he enjoyed listening to music with Elvis being his favorite of all time. Bill and Catherine took every opportunity they could to get out of the house. Many times, they made multiple trips weekly to Knoebel’s where they especially enjoyed the entertainment and musical performances; they were also known to frequent many of the local restaurants. Earlier in life, Bill enjoyed hunting. Above all else, his family was of most importance to him, most notably his grandchildren who were all individually, “his favorite”.
Surviving in addition to his wife of almost sixty-four years, Catherine L. (Sosnoski) Szido are his three children, Cathy Scicchitano (Tony) of Elysburg, Deborah Zeluskey (John) of Mount Carmel and William Paul Szido (Michelle) of Mount Carmel; nine grandchildren, Cathy’s and Tony’s children, Gina Artz (Zach), Rachael Roth (Steve), Maria Scicchitano (Heidi) and Anthony Scicchitano (Isabella), Debbie’s and John’s children, Alex Zeluskey (Brooke) and Anna Zeluskey (Justin), and Bill’s and Michelle’s children, William Paul “Billy” Szido III, Joey Szido (Shawna) and Summer Rose Szido; eight great-grandchildren, Hunter, Bo and Isla, Xander and Ava, and Arielle, Jonah and Joy; sisters, Pauline Apichella (Joe) of the The Villages, Florida, Sandy Donmoyer Miller of Arkansas, Debbie Campbell of Shamokin and Lorie Reed of Texas; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.
Preceding him in death in addition to his parents were Kathryn (Williams) Kucheskie; two brothers, Dave Kucheskie and Denny Kucheskie; and a sister, Bonnie Hlavaty.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, July 21, 2026 at 11:00 am in Divine Redeemer Church, 300 West Avenue, Mount Carmel with Reverend Bernard Wamayose, A. J., Pastor as the celebrant. Interment with military honors will follow in All Saints Cemetery, Bear Gap, Ralpho Township. A viewing will be held on Tuesday morning from 9:00 am until 10:30 am at the Jospeh J. Stutz, Inc. Funeral Home, 40 South Market Street, Mount Carmel, Joseph J. Stutz III, Supervisor.
