Obituary for Shirley Ann Mychak

Shirley Ann (Greco) Mychak, 79, of 4425 St. Andrews Way, Harrisburg, passed away Saturday, February 11, 2023, at her home surrounded by her loving family.

She was born September 10, 1943 in Danville, PA, a daughter of the late Rita (Tanney) and Louis Greco.

Shirley was a 1961 graduate of Mt. Carmel Area High School where she was a cheerleader and voted “Most Courteous” by her senior class and a 1965 graduate of Susquehanna University where she received a dual bachelor’s degree in Sociology and Psychology.

She married Dennis R. Mychak, M.D., on December 30, 1967 at St. Peter and Paul’s Church, Mt. Carmel. They were happily married for 28 years until Dennis’s death on November 9, 1995.

After college, Shirley moved to Chicago, Ill. to work as a social worker in the city while Dennis attended Loyola Medical School. Ultimately, she would move back to Mt. Carmel, PA with Dennis where she would remain until moving to Harrisburg with her daughter, Natalie, in 2012.

In the early 1970’s, Shirley gave up her career to focus on her family. She had a kind and generous heart and was devoted to her family, especially her children. She became a licensed beautician later in life which she used to do the hair of family and friends.

Throughout her adult life, Shirley exercised frequently; it was not unusual to see her jogging around the Mt. Carmel Town Park multiple times per week. When Shirley was not taking care of her family, she loved to cook and entertain family and friends. Two of her specialties were homemade cheese pierogies and her famous chili. In her free time, she loved to draw and paint. She was extremely fond of jewelry and was an avid QVC shopper. Shirley loved all animals, especially birds and leaves behind her pet conure, Oiseau, which spent most of his time perched on her shoulder.

Surviving are daughters, Pamela Mychak-Scull, of Halifax, PA, Tanyia Montgomery and her husband, Ben Montgomery, M.D., of Lewisberry, PA, Natalie Mychak-Belfanti and her husband Eric Belfanti, of Harrisburg, PA; her eight grandchildren, Jasmine and her husband, Justin Jaworski, Nadia Ferri, Benny Montgomery, Eric Belfanti Jr., Patrick Belfanti, Chase Montgomery, Bode Montgomery, and Ella Belfanti; three great-grandchildren, London Jaworski, Piper Ferri, and Lucia Jaworski; two siblings, Louis Greco Jr., of Mt. Carmel, and Donna Greco, of Mt. Carmel; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
